Houston Lightning Detection Images

EMWIN Houston operates a Boltek single antenna  lightning detector located on the Harris County Appraisal District building at 13013 Northwest Freeway, Houston, TX.   The system detects and plots radio frequency energy generated by lightning activity.  Because of accuracy limitations with single antenna detector systems, lightning stroke locations are only approximate.  Do not rely on these images for protection of life and property.

WASP2 Radar & Lightning Composite

Live data collected from the EMWIN Houston lightning detector is submitted in real time to the StrikeStar network where it is compared with live data received from other StrikeStar participants.  Strikes for which triangulation is possible are plotted as an overlay on this Wide Area Storm Probe (WASP2) radar composite image.  These are more accurate in terms of location, but untriangulated strikes will not be displayed:

This image shows the approximate location of lightning activity observed on our detector.  These strikes have not been triangulated with other StrikeStar locations and considerable position error may exist:

Other Images

The software at EMWIN Houston also produces a StormVue image from strikes detected on the Houston antenna.  As with the local detector image, considerable position error may exist.  Viewing of this image requires that Java be installed on your computer.  Controls at the top of the image allow for both zooming and looping.
